First step is removing your shower curtain. Shower curtains are usually attached to a rod which hangs high on your bathroom walls. This can be easily done by removing the screws. Some shower rods are easy to remove because they are the lock type. This can be removed by just pulling the rods so that it snaps out of place. Remember to use utility gloves while doing this as molds are quite nasty! And they are pretty slimy, too!
Second step is to place your curtain on your washing machine and let it spin. Do not worry about warping or damaging your curtains because it would not happen as long as you follow this carefully. Remember to use warm water with this step and set the timer so as to match the time you wash your towels.
Also, do not use fabric softeners as these affect absorbency. And oh! Do not forget your powder or liquid detergent and voila! You have neat-looking curtain again. Do not forget to wash your washing machine with detergent as the molds and mildews of your curtain have been transferred here. Dry your curtain by wiping them or by simply hanging them. What you do next is just hang your shower curtain back to its original place.
If you do not prefer all the mildews and molds from getting trapped in your washing machine, you may also consider manual hand scrubbing. All you need is your brush (preferably use a big brush as you will be dealing with a very large shower curtain) and your favorite cleaning material.
Now be careful with choosing the cleaning product that you will use for this as chemicals that are contained in some of these home cleaning materials may damage your shower curtain. So make sure that you are using products that would not lead to the deterioration of your curtain.
There are these natural cleaning products and you might want to consider them. Back to the topic, when cleaning your curtain, a good scrub is always the best way. No other way can produce great results. Simply do the previously mentioned steps and you're sure to see great results!
To maintain your mold-free curtain, be sure to leave your curtain draping (and not crumple up) so that accumulated moisture won't allow for the growth of these fungi (Yes, molds are fungi!). You may also want to consider adding white vinegar to the washing solution as this acid is quite effective in deactivating molds.
Once deactivated, they will be easier to remove and the chance of future growth will be eliminated. Also when drying your curtains, you may also put them in the dryer provided that you are very conscious not to leave it in there for a minute or more.
